Meskatech / Gnobbi

A Matrix chat client for your desktop, direct to your own server

Gnobbi is a desktop chat client for Matrix, the open messaging network. It connects straight to the homeserver you choose, with no gateway or middleman between you and your server. These are early test builds: usable, but unfinished.

Early test builds for Linux (x86_64 AppImage) and Windows 10/11 (64-bit ZIP, unsigned). Free download; a macOS TestFlight is planned.

What you can do

Straight to your server

Sign in with your Matrix ID and password on your own homeserver. Synapse and Tuwunel are the reference servers; there is no extra gateway.

End-to-end encryption

Encryption comes from the official Matrix Rust SDK. You can enter an existing recovery key to bring back encrypted history from your key backup, or create one if the account has none.

A familiar chat layout

Room list on the left, conversation on the right, keyboard-friendly and fast, written in Rust with the GPUI toolkit.

Linux and Windows

A single AppImage for Linux with native Wayland (and X11), and a portable ZIP for Windows 10/11. A macOS version is in TestFlight testing.

Questions, answered

Is Gnobbi finished?

No. These are early test builds: the interface changes often and some features are missing. Please do not rely on it as your only Matrix client yet.

Why does Windows warn me when I start it?

The Windows build is not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC". Choose More info, then Run anyway.

How do I run the Linux build?

Download the AppImage, make it executable (chmod +x Gnobbi-x86_64.AppImage) and run it. It needs a desktop session with GPU/Vulkan, Wayland or X11 libraries.
